Be still.
Just for a moment.
Listen to the world around you. Feel your breath coming in and going out. Listen to your thoughts. See the details of your surroundings.
Be at peace with being still.

In this modern world, activity and movement are the default modes, if not with our bodies then at least with our minds, with our attention. We rush around all day, doing things, talking, emailing, sending and reading messages, clicking from browser tab to the next, one link to the next.

We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no time for stillness — and sitting in front of a frenetic computer all day, and then in front of the hyperactive television, doesn’t count as stillness.

This comes at a cost: we lose that time for contemplation, for observing and listening. We lose peace.

And worse yet: all the rushing around is often counterproductive. I know, in our society action is all-important — inaction is seen as lazy and passive and unproductive. However, sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You can run around crazily, all sound and fury, but get nothing done. Or you can get a lot done — but nothing important. Or you can hurt things with your actions, make things worse than if you’d stayed still.

And when we are forced to be still — because we’re in line for something, or waiting at a doctor’s appointment, or on a bus or train — we often get antsy, and need to find something to do. Some of us will have our mobile devices, others will have a notebook or folder with things to do or read, others will fidget. Being still isn’t something we’re used to.

Take a moment to think about how you spend your days — at work, after work, getting ready for work, evenings and weekends. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading and answering messages, checking on the news and the latest stream of information? Are you always trying to Get Lots of Things Done, ticking off tasks from your list like a machine, rushing through your schedule?

Is this how you want to spend your life?
If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be still. Don’t think about what you have to do, or what you’ve done already. Just be in the moment.

Then after a minute or two of doing that, contemplate your life, and how you’d like it to be. See your life with less movement, less doing, less rushing. See it with more stillness, more contemplation, more peace.

Then be that vision.

It’s pretty simple, actually: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day. Once you’ve gotten used to that, try doing less each day. Breathe when you feel yourself moving too fast. Slow down. Be present. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of waiting for it.

Savor the stillness. It’s a treasure, and it’s available to us, always.

Breathe.

Breathing can transform your life.

If you feel stressed out and overwhelmed, breathe. It will calm you and release the tensions.

If you are worried about something coming up, or caught up in something that already happened, breathe. It will bring you back to the present.

If you are discouraged and have forgotten your purpose in life, breathe. It will remind you about how precious life is, and that each breath in this life is a gift you need to appreciate. Make the most of this gift.

If you have too many tasks to do, or are scattered during your workday, breathe. It will help bring you into focus, to concentrate on the most important task you need to be focusing on right now.

If you are spending time with someone you love, breathe. It will allow you to be present with that person, rather than thinking about work or other things you need to do.

If you are exercising, breathe. It will help you enjoy the exercise, and therefore stick with it for longer.

If you are moving too fast, breathe. It will remind you to slow down, and enjoy life more.

So breathe. And enjoy each moment of this life. They’re too fleeting and few to waste.

ข้อที่หนึ่ง เราหว่านอะไรลงไป เราจะได้ผลอย่างนั้น

If you wanted to get rich, how would you do it? I think your best bet would be to start or join a startup. That's been a reliable way to get rich for hundreds of years. The word "startup" dates from the 1960s, but what happens in one is very similar to the venture-backed trading voyages of the Middle Ages.

Startups usually involve technology, so much so that the phrase "high-tech startup" is almost redundant. A startup is a small company that takes on a hard technical problem.

Lots of people get rich knowing nothing more than that. You don't have to know physics to be a good pitcher. But I think it could give you an edge to understand the underlying principles. Why do startups have to be small? Will a startup inevitably stop being a startup as it grows larger? And why do they so often work on developing new technology? Why are there so many startups selling new drugs or computer software, and none selling corn oil or laundry detergent?

The Proposition

Economically, you can think of a startup as a way to compress your whole working life into a few years. Instead of working at a low intensity for forty years, you work as hard as you possibly can for four. This pays especially well in technology, where you earn a premium for working fast.

Here is a brief sketch of the economic proposition. If you're a good hacker in your mid twenties, you can get a job paying about $80,000 per year. So on average such a hacker must be able to do at least $80,000 worth of work per year for the company just to break even. You could probably work twice as many hours as a corporate employee, and if you focus you can probably get three times as much done in an hour. [1] You should get another multiple of two, at least, by eliminating the drag of the pointy-haired middle manager who would be your boss in a big company. Then there is one more multiple: how much smarter are you than your job description expects you to be? Suppose another multiple of three. Combine all these multipliers, and I'm claiming you could be 36 times more productive than you're expected to be in a random corporate job. [2] If a fairly good hacker is worth $80,000 a year at a big company, then a smart hacker working very hard without any corporate bullshit to slow him down should be able to do work worth about $3 million a year.

Like all back-of-the-envelope calculations, this one has a lot of wiggle room. I wouldn't try to defend the actual numbers. But I stand by the structure of the calculation. I'm not claiming the multiplier is precisely 36, but it is certainly more than 10, and probably rarely as high as 100.

If $3 million a year seems high, remember that we're talking about the limit case: the case where you not only have zero leisure time but indeed work so hard that you endanger your health.

Startups are not magic. They don't change the laws of wealth creation. They just represent a point at the far end of the curve. There is a conservation law at work here: if you want to make a million dollars, you have to endure a million dollars' worth of pain. For example, one way to make a million dollars would be to work for the Post Office your whole life, and save every penny of your salary. Imagine the stress of working for the Post Office for fifty years. In a startup you compress all this stress into three or four years. You do tend to get a certain bulk discount if you buy the economy-size pain, but you can't evade the fundamental conservation law. If starting a startup were easy, everyone would do it.

Millions, not Billions

If $3 million a year seems high to some people, it will seem low to others. Three million? How do I get to be a billionaire, like Bill Gates?

So let's get Bill Gates out of the way right now. It's not a good idea to use famous rich people as examples, because the press only write about the very richest, and these tend to be outliers. Bill Gates is a smart, determined, and hardworking man, but you need more than that to make as much money as he has. You also need to be very lucky.

There is a large random factor in the success of any company. So the guys you end up reading about in the papers are the ones who are very smart, totally dedicated, and win the lottery. Certainly Bill is smart and dedicated, but Microsoft also happens to have been the beneficiary of one of the most spectacular blunders in the history of business: the licensing deal for DOS. No doubt Bill did everything he could to steer IBM into making that blunder, and he has done an excellent job of exploiting it, but if there had been one person with a brain on IBM's side, Microsoft's future would have been very different. Microsoft at that stage had little leverage over IBM. They were effectively a component supplier. If IBM had required an exclusive license, as they should have, Microsoft would still have signed the deal. It would still have meant a lot of money for them, and IBM could easily have gotten an operating system elsewhere.

Instead IBM ended up using all its power in the market to give Microsoft control of the PC standard. From that point, all Microsoft had to do was execute. They never had to bet the company on a bold decision. All they had to do was play hardball with licensees and copy more innovative products reasonably promptly.

If IBM hadn't made this mistake, Microsoft would still have been a successful company, but it could not have grown so big so fast. Bill Gates would be rich, but he'd be somewhere near the bottom of the Forbes 400 with the other guys his age.

There are a lot of ways to get rich, and this essay is about only one of them. This essay is about how to make money by creating wealth and getting paid for it. There are plenty of other ways to get money, including chance, speculation, marriage, inheritance, theft, extortion, fraud, monopoly, graft, lobbying, counterfeiting, and prospecting. Most of the greatest fortunes have probably involved several of these.

The advantage of creating wealth, as a way to get rich, is not just that it's more legitimate (many of the other methods are now illegal) but that it's more straightforward. You just have to do something people want.

Money Is Not Wealth

If you want to create wealth, it will help to understand what it is. Wealth is not the same thing as money. [3] Wealth is as old as human history. Far older, in fact; ants have wealth. Money is a comparatively recent invention.

Wealth is the fundamental thing. Wealth is stuff we want: food, clothes, houses, cars, gadgets, travel to interesting places, and so on. You can have wealth without having money. If you had a magic machine that could on command make you a car or cook you dinner or do your laundry, or do anything else you wanted, you wouldn't need money. Whereas if you were in the middle of Antarctica, where there is nothing to buy, it wouldn't matter how much money you had.

Wealth is what you want, not money. But if wealth is the important thing, why does everyone talk about making money? It is a kind of shorthand: money is a way of moving wealth, and in practice they are usually interchangeable. But they are not the same thing, and unless you plan to get rich by counterfeiting, talking about making money can make it harder to understand how to make money.

Money is a side effect of specialization. In a specialized society, most of the things you need, you can't make for yourself. If you want a potato or a pencil or a place to live, you have to get it from someone else.

How do you get the person who grows the potatoes to give you some? By giving him something he wants in return. But you can't get very far by trading things directly with the people who need them. If you make violins, and none of the local farmers wants one, how will you eat?

The solution societies find, as they get more specialized, is to make the trade into a two-step process. Instead of trading violins directly for potatoes, you trade violins for, say, silver, which you can then trade again for anything else you need. The intermediate stuff-- the medium of exchange-- can be anything that's rare and portable. Historically metals have been the most common, but recently we've been using a medium of exchange, called the dollar, that doesn't physically exist. It works as a medium of exchange, however, because its rarity is guaranteed by the U.S. Government.

The advantage of a medium of exchange is that it makes trade work. The disadvantage is that it tends to obscure what trade really means. People think that what a business does is make money. But money is just the intermediate stage-- just a shorthand-- for whatever people want. What most businesses really do is make wealth. They do something people want. [4]

The Pie Fallacy

A surprising number of people retain from childhood the idea that there is a fixed amount of wealth in the world. There is, in any normal family, a fixed amount of money at any moment. But that's not the same thing.

When wealth is talked about in this context, it is often described as a pie. "You can't make the pie larger," say politicians. When you're talking about the amount of money in one family's bank account, or the amount available to a government from one year's tax revenue, this is true. If one person gets more, someone else has to get less.

I can remember believing, as a child, that if a few rich people had all the money, it left less for everyone else. Many people seem to continue to believe something like this well into adulthood. This fallacy is usually there in the background when you hear someone talking about how x percent of the population have y percent of the wealth. If you plan to start a startup, then whether you realize it or not, you're planning to disprove the Pie Fallacy.

What leads people astray here is the abstraction of money. Money is not wealth. It's just something we use to move wealth around. So although there may be, in certain specific moments (like your family, this month) a fixed amount of money available to trade with other people for things you want, there is not a fixed amount of wealth in the world. You can make more wealth. Wealth has been getting created and destroyed (but on balance, created) for all of human history.

Suppose you own a beat-up old car. Instead of sitting on your butt next summer, you could spend the time restoring your car to pristine condition. In doing so you create wealth. The world is-- and you specifically are-- one pristine old car the richer. And not just in some metaphorical way. If you sell your car, you'll get more for it.

In restoring your old car you have made yourself richer. You haven't made anyone else poorer. So there is obviously not a fixed pie. And in fact, when you look at it this way, you wonder why anyone would think there was. [5]

Kids know, without knowing they know, that they can create wealth. If you need to give someone a present and don't have any money, you make one. But kids are so bad at making things that they consider home-made presents to be a distinct, inferior, sort of thing to store-bought ones-- a mere expression of the proverbial thought that counts. And indeed, the lumpy ashtrays we made for our parents did not have much of a resale market.

Craftsmen

The people most likely to grasp that wealth can be created are the ones who are good at making things, the craftsmen. Their hand-made objects become store-bought ones. But with the rise of industrialization there are fewer and fewer craftsmen. One of the biggest remaining groups is computer programmers.

A programmer can sit down in front of a computer and create wealth. A good piece of software is, in itself, a valuable thing. There is no manufacturing to confuse the issue. Those characters you type are a complete, finished product. If someone sat down and wrote a web browser that didn't suck (a fine idea, by the way), the world would be that much richer. [5b]

Everyone in a company works together to create wealth, in the sense of making more things people want. Many of the employees (e.g. the people in the mailroom or the personnel department) work at one remove from the actual making of stuff. Not the programmers. They literally think the product, one line at a time. And so it's clearer to programmers that wealth is something that's made, rather than being distributed, like slices of a pie, by some imaginary Daddy.

It's also obvious to programmers that there are huge variations in the rate at which wealth is created. At Viaweb we had one programmer who was a sort of monster of productivity. I remember watching what he did one long day and estimating that he had added several hundred thousand dollars to the market value of the company. A great programmer, on a roll, could create a million dollars worth of wealth in a couple weeks. A mediocre programmer over the same period will generate zero or even negative wealth (e.g. by introducing bugs).

This is why so many of the best programmers are libertarians. In our world, you sink or swim, and there are no excuses. When those far removed from the creation of wealth-- undergraduates, reporters, politicians-- hear that the richest 5% of the people have half the total wealth, they tend to think injustice! An experienced programmer would be more likely to think is that all? The top 5% of programmers probably write 99% of the good software.

Wealth can be created without being sold. Scientists, till recently at least, effectively donated the wealth they created. We are all richer for knowing about penicillin, because we're less likely to die from infections. Wealth is whatever people want, and not dying is certainly something we want. Hackers often donate their work by writing open source software that anyone can use for free. I am much the richer for the operating system FreeBSD, which I'm running on the computer I'm using now, and so is Yahoo, which runs it on all their servers.

What a Job Is

In industrialized countries, people belong to one institution or another at least until their twenties. After all those years you get used to the idea of belonging to a group of people who all get up in the morning, go to some set of buildings, and do things that they do not, ordinarily, enjoy doing. Belonging to such a group becomes part of your identity: name, age, role, institution. If you have to introduce yourself, or someone else describes you, it will be as something like, John Smith, age 10, a student at such and such elementary school, or John Smith, age 20, a student at such and such college.

When John Smith finishes school he is expected to get a job. And what getting a job seems to mean is joining another institution. Superficially it's a lot like college. You pick the companies you want to work for and apply to join them. If one likes you, you become a member of this new group. You get up in the morning and go to a new set of buildings, and do things that you do not, ordinarily, enjoy doing. There are a few differences: life is not as much fun, and you get paid, instead of paying, as you did in college. But the similarities feel greater than the differences. John Smith is now John Smith, 22, a software developer at such and such corporation.

In fact John Smith's life has changed more than he realizes. Socially, a company looks much like college, but the deeper you go into the underlying reality, the more different it gets.

What a company does, and has to do if it wants to continue to exist, is earn money. And the way most companies make money is by creating wealth. Companies can be so specialized that this similarity is concealed, but it is not only manufacturing companies that create wealth. A big component of wealth is location. Remember that magic machine that could make you cars and cook you dinner and so on? It would not be so useful if it delivered your dinner to a random location in central Asia. If wealth means what people want, companies that move things also create wealth. Ditto for many other kinds of companies that don't make anything physical. Nearly all companies exist to do something people want.

And that's what you do, as well, when you go to work for a company. But here there is another layer that tends to obscure the underlying reality. In a company, the work you do is averaged together with a lot of other people's. You may not even be aware you're doing something people want. Your contribution may be indirect. But the company as a whole must be giving people something they want, or they won't make any money. And if they are paying you x dollars a year, then on average you must be contributing at least x dollars a year worth of work, or the company will be spending more than it makes, and will go out of business.

Someone graduating from college thinks, and is told, that he needs to get a job, as if the important thing were becoming a member of an institution. A more direct way to put it would be: you need to start doing something people want. You don't need to join a company to do that. All a company is is a group of people working together to do something people want. It's doing something people want that matters, not joining the group. [6]

For most people the best plan probably is to go to work for some existing company. But it is a good idea to understand what's happening when you do this. A job means doing something people want, averaged together with everyone else in that company.

Working Harder

That averaging gets to be a problem. I think the single biggest problem afflicting large companies is the difficulty of assigning a value to each person's work. For the most part they punt. In a big company you get paid a fairly predictable salary for working fairly hard. You're expected not to be obviously incompetent or lazy, but you're not expected to devote your whole life to your work.

It turns out, though, that there are economies of scale in how much of your life you devote to your work. In the right kind of business, someone who really devoted himself to work could generate ten or even a hundred times as much wealth as an average employee. A programmer, for example, instead of chugging along maintaining and updating an existing piece of software, could write a whole new piece of software, and with it create a new source of revenue.

Companies are not set up to reward people who want to do this. You can't go to your boss and say, I'd like to start working ten times as hard, so will you please pay me ten times as much? For one thing, the official fiction is that you are already working as hard as you can. But a more serious problem is that the company has no way of measuring the value of your work.

Salesmen are an exception. It's easy to measure how much revenue they generate, and they're usually paid a percentage of it. If a salesman wants to work harder, he can just start doing it, and he will automatically get paid proportionally more.

There is one other job besides sales where big companies can hire first-rate people: in the top management jobs. And for the same reason: their performance can be measured. The top managers are held responsible for the performance of the entire company. Because an ordinary employee's performance can't usually be measured, he is not expected to do more than put in a solid effort. Whereas top management, like salespeople, have to actually come up with the numbers. The CEO of a company that tanks cannot plead that he put in a solid effort. If the company does badly, he's done badly.

A company that could pay all its employees so straightforwardly would be enormously successful. Many employees would work harder if they could get paid for it. More importantly, such a company would attract people who wanted to work especially hard. It would crush its competitors.

Unfortunately, companies can't pay everyone like salesmen. Salesmen work alone. Most employees' work is tangled together. Suppose a company makes some kind of consumer gadget. The engineers build a reliable gadget with all kinds of new features; the industrial designers design a beautiful case for it; and then the marketing people convince everyone that it's something they've got to have. How do you know how much of the gadget's sales are due to each group's efforts? Or, for that matter, how much is due to the creators of past gadgets that gave the company a reputation for quality? There's no way to untangle all their contributions. Even if you could read the minds of the consumers, you'd find these factors were all blurred together.

If you want to go faster, it's a problem to have your work tangled together with a large number of other people's. In a large group, your performance is not separately measurable-- and the rest of the group slows you down.

Measurement and Leverage

To get rich you need to get yourself in a situation with two things, measurement and leverage. You need to be in a position where your performance can be measured, or there is no way to get paid more by doing more. And you have to have leverage, in the sense that the decisions you make have a big effect.

Measurement alone is not enough. An example of a job with measurement but not leverage is doing piecework in a sweatshop. Your performance is measured and you get paid accordingly, but you have no scope for decisions. The only decision you get to make is how fast you work, and that can probably only increase your earnings by a factor of two or three.

An example of a job with both measurement and leverage would be lead actor in a movie. Your performance can be measured in the gross of the movie. And you have leverage in the sense that your performance can make or break it.

CEOs also have both measurement and leverage. They're measured, in that the performance of the company is their performance. And they have leverage in that their decisions set the whole company moving in one direction or another.

I think everyone who gets rich by their own efforts will be found to be in a situation with measurement and leverage. Everyone I can think of does: CEOs, movie stars, hedge fund managers, professional athletes. A good hint to the presence of leverage is the possibility of failure. Upside must be balanced by downside, so if there is big potential for gain there must also be a terrifying possibility of loss. CEOs, stars, fund managers, and athletes all live with the sword hanging over their heads; the moment they start to suck, they're out. If you're in a job that feels safe, you are not going to get rich, because if there is no danger there is almost certainly no leverage.

But you don't have to become a CEO or a movie star to be in a situation with measurement and leverage. All you need to do is be part of a small group working on a hard problem.

Smallness = Measurement

If you can't measure the value of the work done by individual employees, you can get close. You can measure the value of the work done by small groups.

One level at which you can accurately measure the revenue generated by employees is at the level of the whole company. When the company is small, you are thereby fairly close to measuring the contributions of individual employees. A viable startup might only have ten employees, which puts you within a factor of ten of measuring individual effort.

Starting or joining a startup is thus as close as most people can get to saying to one's boss, I want to work ten times as hard, so please pay me ten times as much. There are two differences: you're not saying it to your boss, but directly to the customers (for whom your boss is only a proxy after all), and you're not doing it individually, but along with a small group of other ambitious people.

It will, ordinarily, be a group. Except in a few unusual kinds of work, like acting or writing books, you can't be a company of one person. And the people you work with had better be good, because it's their work that yours is going to be averaged with.

A big company is like a giant galley driven by a thousand rowers. Two things keep the speed of the galley down. One is that individual rowers don't see any result from working harder. The other is that, in a group of a thousand people, the average rower is likely to be pretty average.

If you took ten people at random out of the big galley and put them in a boat by themselves, they could probably go faster. They would have both carrot and stick to motivate them. An energetic rower would be encouraged by the thought that he could have a visible effect on the speed of the boat. And if someone was lazy, the others would be more likely to notice and complain.

But the real advantage of the ten-man boat shows when you take the ten best rowers out of the big galley and put them in a boat together. They will have all the extra motivation that comes from being in a small group. But more importantly, by selecting that small a group you can get the best rowers. Each one will be in the top 1%. It's a much better deal for them to average their work together with a small group of their peers than to average it with everyone.

That's the real point of startups. Ideally, you are getting together with a group of other people who also want to work a lot harder, and get paid a lot more, than they would in a big company. And because startups tend to get founded by self-selecting groups of ambitious people who already know one another (at least by reputation), the level of measurement is more precise than you get from smallness alone. A startup is not merely ten people, but ten people like you.

Steve Jobs once said that the success or failure of a startup depends on the first ten employees. I agree. If anything, it's more like the first five. Being small is not, in itself, what makes startups kick butt, but rather that small groups can be select. You don't want small in the sense of a village, but small in the sense of an all-star team.

The larger a group, the closer its average member will be to the average for the population as a whole. So all other things being equal, a very able person in a big company is probably getting a bad deal, because his performance is dragged down by the overall lower performance of the others. Of course, all other things often are not equal: the able person may not care about money, or may prefer the stability of a large company. But a very able person who does care about money will ordinarily do better to go off and work with a small group of peers.

Technology = Leverage

Startups offer anyone a way to be in a situation with measurement and leverage. They allow measurement because they're small, and they offer leverage because they make money by inventing new technology.

What is technology? It's technique. It's the way we all do things. And when you discover a new way to do things, its value is multiplied by all the people who use it. It is the proverbial fishing rod, rather than the fish. That's the difference between a startup and a restaurant or a barber shop. You fry eggs or cut hair one customer at a time. Whereas if you solve a technical problem that a lot of people care about, you help everyone who uses your solution. That's leverage.

If you look at history, it seems that most people who got rich by creating wealth did it by developing new technology. You just can't fry eggs or cut hair fast enough. What made the Florentines rich in 1200 was the discovery of new techniques for making the high-tech product of the time, fine woven cloth. What made the Dutch rich in 1600 was the discovery of shipbuilding and navigation techniques that enabled them to dominate the seas of the Far East.

Fortunately there is a natural fit between smallness and solving hard problems. The leading edge of technology moves fast. Technology that's valuable today could be worthless in a couple years. Small companies are more at home in this world, because they don't have layers of bureaucracy to slow them down. Also, technical advances tend to come from unorthodox approaches, and small companies are less constrained by convention.

Big companies can develop technology. They just can't do it quickly. Their size makes them slow and prevents them from rewarding employees for the extraordinary effort required. So in practice big companies only get to develop technology in fields where large capital requirements prevent startups from competing with them, like microprocessors, power plants, or passenger aircraft. And even in those fields they depend heavily on startups for components and ideas.

It's obvious that biotech or software startups exist to solve hard technical problems, but I think it will also be found to be true in businesses that don't seem to be about technology. McDonald's, for example, grew big by designing a system, the McDonald's franchise, that could then be reproduced at will all over the face of the earth. A McDonald's franchise is controlled by rules so precise that it is practically a piece of software. Write once, run everywhere. Ditto for Wal-Mart. Sam Walton got rich not by being a retailer, but by designing a new kind of store.

Use difficulty as a guide not just in selecting the overall aim of your company, but also at decision points along the way. At Viaweb one of our rules of thumb was run upstairs. Suppose you are a little, nimble guy being chased by a big, fat, bully. You open a door and find yourself in a staircase. Do you go up or down? I say up. The bully can probably run downstairs as fast as you can. Going upstairs his bulk will be more of a disadvantage. Running upstairs is hard for you but even harder for him.

What this meant in practice was that we deliberately sought hard problems. If there were two features we could add to our software, both equally valuable in proportion to their difficulty, we'd always take the harder one. Not just because it was more valuable, but because it was harder. We delighted in forcing bigger, slower competitors to follow us over difficult ground. Like guerillas, startups prefer the difficult terrain of the mountains, where the troops of the central government can't follow. I can remember times when we were just exhausted after wrestling all day with some horrible technical problem. And I'd be delighted, because something that was hard for us would be impossible for our competitors.

This is not just a good way to run a startup. It's what a startup is. Venture capitalists know about this and have a phrase for it: barriers to entry. If you go to a VC with a new idea and ask him to invest in it, one of the first things he'll ask is, how hard would this be for someone else to develop? That is, how much difficult ground have you put between yourself and potential pursuers? [7] And you had better have a convincing explanation of why your technology would be hard to duplicate. Otherwise as soon as some big company becomes aware of it, they'll make their own, and with their brand name, capital, and distribution clout, they'll take away your market overnight. You'd be like guerillas caught in the open field by regular army forces.

One way to put up barriers to entry is through patents. But patents may not provide much protection. Competitors commonly find ways to work around a patent. And if they can't, they may simply violate it and invite you to sue them. A big company is not afraid to be sued; it's an everyday thing for them. They'll make sure that suing them is expensive and takes a long time. Ever heard of Philo Farnsworth? He invented television. The reason you've never heard of him is that his company was not the one to make money from it. [8] The company that did was RCA, and Farnsworth's reward for his efforts was a decade of patent litigation.

Here, as so often, the best defense is a good offense. If you can develop technology that's simply too hard for competitors to duplicate, you don't need to rely on other defenses. Start by picking a hard problem, and then at every decision point, take the harder choice. [9]

The Catch(es)

If it were simply a matter of working harder than an ordinary employee and getting paid proportionately, it would obviously be a good deal to start a startup. Up to a point it would be more fun. I don't think many people like the slow pace of big companies, the interminable meetings, the water-cooler conversations, the clueless middle managers, and so on.

Unfortunately there are a couple catches. One is that you can't choose the point on the curve that you want to inhabit. You can't decide, for example, that you'd like to work just two or three times as hard, and get paid that much more. When you're running a startup, your competitors decide how hard you work. And they pretty much all make the same decision: as hard as you possibly can.

The other catch is that the payoff is only on average proportionate to your productivity. There is, as I said before, a large random multiplier in the success of any company. So in practice the deal is not that you're 30 times as productive and get paid 30 times as much. It is that you're 30 times as productive, and get paid between zero and a thousand times as much. If the mean is 30x, the median is probably zero. Most startups tank, and not just the dogfood portals we all heard about during the Internet Bubble. It's common for a startup to be developing a genuinely good product, take slightly too long to do it, run out of money, and have to shut down.

A startup is like a mosquito. A bear can absorb a hit and a crab is armored against one, but a mosquito is designed for one thing: to score. No energy is wasted on defense. The defense of mosquitos, as a species, is that there are a lot of them, but this is little consolation to the individual mosquito.

Startups, like mosquitos, tend to be an all-or-nothing proposition. And you don't generally know which of the two you're going to get till the last minute. Viaweb came close to tanking several times. Our trajectory was like a sine wave. Fortunately we got bought at the top of the cycle, but it was damned close. While we were visiting Yahoo in California to talk about selling the company to them, we had to borrow a conference room to reassure an investor who was about to back out of a new round of funding that we needed to stay alive.

The all-or-nothing aspect of startups was not something we wanted. Viaweb's hackers were all extremely risk-averse. If there had been some way just to work super hard and get paid for it, without having a lottery mixed in, we would have been delighted. We would have much preferred a 100% chance of $1 million to a 20% chance of $10 million, even though theoretically the second is worth twice as much. Unfortunately, there is not currently any space in the business world where you can get the first deal.

The closest you can get is by selling your startup in the early stages, giving up upside (and risk) for a smaller but guaranteed payoff. We had a chance to do this, and stupidly, as we then thought, let it slip by. After that we became comically eager to sell. For the next year or so, if anyone expressed the slightest curiousity about Viaweb we would try to sell them the company. But there were no takers, so we had to keep going.

It would have been a bargain to buy us at an early stage, but companies doing acquisitions are not looking for bargains. A company big enough to acquire startups will be big enough to be fairly conservative, and within the company the people in charge of acquisitions will be among the more conservative, because they are likely to be business school types who joined the company late. They would rather overpay for a safe choice. So it is easier to sell an established startup, even at a large premium, than an early-stage one.

Get Users

I think it's a good idea to get bought, if you can. Running a business is different from growing one. It is just as well to let a big company take over once you reach cruising altitude. It's also financially wiser, because selling allows you to diversify. What would you think of a financial advisor who put all his client's assets into one volatile stock?

How do you get bought? Mostly by doing the same things you'd do if you didn't intend to sell the company. Being profitable, for example. But getting bought is also an art in its own right, and one that we spent a lot of time trying to master.

Potential buyers will always delay if they can. The hard part about getting bought is getting them to act. For most people, the most powerful motivator is not the hope of gain, but the fear of loss. For potential acquirers, the most powerful motivator is the prospect that one of their competitors will buy you. This, as we found, causes CEOs to take red-eyes. The second biggest is the worry that, if they don't buy you now, you'll continue to grow rapidly and will cost more to acquire later, or even become a competitor.

In both cases, what it all comes down to is users. You'd think that a company about to buy you would do a lot of research and decide for themselves how valuable your technology was. Not at all. What they go by is the number of users you have.

In effect, acquirers assume the customers know who has the best technology. And this is not as stupid as it sounds. Users are the only real proof that you've created wealth. Wealth is what people want, and if people aren't using your software, maybe it's not just because you're bad at marketing. Maybe it's because you haven't made what they want.

Venture capitalists have a list of danger signs to watch out for. Near the top is the company run by techno-weenies who are obsessed with solving interesting technical problems, instead of making users happy. In a startup, you're not just trying to solve problems. You're trying to solve problems that users care about.

So I think you should make users the test, just as acquirers do. Treat a startup as an optimization problem in which performance is measured by number of users. As anyone who has tried to optimize software knows, the key is measurement. When you try to guess where your program is slow, and what would make it faster, you almost always guess wrong.

Number of users may not be the perfect test, but it will be very close. It's what acquirers care about. It's what revenues depend on. It's what makes competitors unhappy. It's what impresses reporters, and potential new users. Certainly it's a better test than your a priori notions of what problems are important to solve, no matter how technically adept you are.

Among other things, treating a startup as an optimization problem will help you avoid another pitfall that VCs worry about, and rightly-- taking a long time to develop a product. Now we can recognize this as something hackers already know to avoid: premature optimization. Get a version 1.0 out there as soon as you can. Until you have some users to measure, you're optimizing based on guesses.

The ball you need to keep your eye on here is the underlying principle that wealth is what people want. If you plan to get rich by creating wealth, you have to know what people want. So few businesses really pay attention to making customers happy. How often do you walk into a store, or call a company on the phone, with a feeling of dread in the back of your mind? When you hear "your call is important to us, please stay on the line," do you think, oh good, now everything will be all right?

A restaurant can afford to serve the occasional burnt dinner. But in technology, you cook one thing and that's what everyone eats. So any difference between what people want and what you deliver is multiplied. You please or annoy customers wholesale. The closer you can get to what they want, the more wealth you generate.

Wealth and Power

Making wealth is not the only way to get rich. For most of human history it has not even been the most common. Until a few centuries ago, the main sources of wealth were mines, slaves and serfs, land, and cattle, and the only ways to acquire these rapidly were by inheritance, marriage, conquest, or confiscation. Naturally wealth had a bad reputation.

Two things changed. The first was the rule of law. For most of the world's history, if you did somehow accumulate a fortune, the ruler or his henchmen would find a way to steal it. But in medieval Europe something new happened. A new class of merchants and manufacturers began to collect in towns. [10] Together they were able to withstand the local feudal lord. So for the first time in our history, the bullies stopped stealing the nerds' lunch money. This was naturally a great incentive, and possibly indeed the main cause of the second big change, industrialization.

A great deal has been written about the causes of the Industrial Revolution. But surely a necessary, if not sufficient, condition was that people who made fortunes be able to enjoy them in peace. [11] One piece of evidence is what happened to countries that tried to return to the old model, like the Soviet Union, and to a lesser extent Britain under the labor governments of the 1960s and early 1970s. Take away the incentive of wealth, and technical innovation grinds to a halt.

Remember what a startup is, economically: a way of saying, I want to work faster. Instead of accumulating money slowly by being paid a regular wage for fifty years, I want to get it over with as soon as possible. So governments that forbid you to accumulate wealth are in effect decreeing that you work slowly. They're willing to let you earn $3 million over fifty years, but they're not willing to let you work so hard that you can do it in two. They are like the corporate boss that you can't go to and say, I want to work ten times as hard, so please pay me ten times a much. Except this is not a boss you can escape by starting your own company.

The problem with working slowly is not just that technical innovation happens slowly. It's that it tends not to happen at all. It's only when you're deliberately looking for hard problems, as a way to use speed to the greatest advantage, that you take on this kind of project. Developing new technology is a pain in the ass. It is, as Edison said, one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Without the incentive of wealth, no one wants to do it. Engineers will work on sexy projects like fighter planes and moon rockets for ordinary salaries, but more mundane technologies like light bulbs or semiconductors have to be developed by entrepreneurs.

Startups are not just something that happened in Silicon Valley in the last couple decades. Since it became possible to get rich by creating wealth, everyone who has done it has used essentially the same recipe: measurement and leverage, where measurement comes from working with a small group, and leverage from developing new techniques. The recipe was the same in Florence in 1200 as it is in Santa Clara today.

Understanding this may help to answer an important question: why Europe grew so powerful. Was it something about the geography of Europe? Was it that Europeans are somehow racially superior? Was it their religion? The answer (or at least the proximate cause) may be that the Europeans rode on the crest of a powerful new idea: allowing those who made a lot of money to keep it.

Once you're allowed to do that, people who want to get rich can do it by generating wealth instead of stealing it. The resulting technological growth translates not only into wealth but into military power. The theory that led to the stealth plane was developed by a Soviet mathematician. But because the Soviet Union didn't have a computer industry, it remained for them a theory; they didn't have hardware capable of executing the calculations fast enough to design an actual airplane.

In that respect the Cold War teaches the same lesson as World War II and, for that matter, most wars in recent history. Don't let a ruling class of warriors and politicians squash the entrepreneurs. The same recipe that makes individuals rich makes countries powerful. Let the nerds keep their lunch money, and you rule the world.

It is when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are a lot of things about yourself that you didn't know and may or may not like. You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two, but then get scared because you barely know where you are now.

You start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those friends that you thought you were so close to aren't exactly the greatest people you have ever met and the people you have lost touch with are some of the most important ones. What you do not realize is that they are realizing that too and are not really cold or catty or mean or insincere, but that they are as confused as you.

You look at your job. It is not even close to what you thought you would be doing or maybe you are looking for one and realizing that you are going to have to start at the bottom and are scared.

You miss the comforts of college, of groups, of socializing with the same people on a constant basis. But then you realize that maybe they weren't so great after all.

You are beginning to understand yourself and what you want and do not want. Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and find yourself judging a bit more than usual because suddenly you realize that you have certain boundaries in your life and add things to your list of what is acceptable and what is not. You are insecure and then secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your life. You feel alone and scared and confused. Suddenly change is the enemy and you try and cling on to the past with dear life but soon realize that the past is drifting further and further away and there is nothing to do but stay where you are or move forward.

You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you loved could do such damage to you or you lay in bed and wonder why you can't meet anyone decent enough to get to know better. You love someone but maybe love someone else too and cannot figure out why you are doing this because you are not a bad person.

One night stands and random hook ups start to look cheap and getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look pathetic. You go through the same emotions and questions over and over and talk with your friends about the same topics because you cannot seem to make a decision.

You worry about loans and money and the future and making a life for yourself and while wining the race would be great, right now you'd just like to be a contender!

What you may not realize is that everyone reading this relates to it. We are in our best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing out"

อยากจะอวยพร Happy Valentine Day! ให้กับผู้อ่านทุกท่าน ไม่ว่าคุณจะคนโสด มีแฟนแล้ว แต่งงานแล้ว หรือว่ามีบุตร/บุตรี แล้วก็ตาม :-) ขอให้ทุกคนมีความสุขในวันแห่งความรักวันนี้ (และทุกๆวันที่กำลังจะมาถึง :) )

วันนี้ผมอยากจะเขียนเกี่ยวกับนิสิตที่เคยเรียนกับผม ซึ่งผมประทับใจในความกล้าหาญของเธอ นิสิตหญิงคนนี้ ชื่อ Pan เป็นนิสิตปีสี่ในหลักสูตร BSAC หรือ Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry, จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ผมได้มีโอกาสสอนเธอและเพื่อนๆของเธอในปีที่แล้ว ในวิชา Management and Organization หรือ ที่เรียกสั้นๆตามนิสิตบัญชีว่า วิชา MGT นั่นเอง

เมื่อวันพฤหัสที่ผ่านมา Pan ได้เข้ามาปรึกษาผมเกี่ยวกับ การเริ่มต้นบริษัทเครื่องสำอางค์ที่เธอตั้งชื่อว่า Seacreta (What a lovely name!) ที่เธอใฝ่ฝันอยากจะทำมาตั้งแต่เด็กๆ จะว่าไปแล้ว นอกจากการแต่งหน้าเต้นระบำตอนสมัยชั้นประถมต้น (ป1 ถึง ป 3) ชีวิตนี้ ผมก็ไม่เคยได้ใช้เครื่องสำอางค์อะไรเท่าไหร่เลย...(ถ้าไม่นับว่า หยิบมาใช้ผิด คิดว่าหลอดลิปสติ็กที่จะใช้ เป็นลิปมัน!) ผมก็คิดๆ เอ....แล้วจะช่วย Pan ปรึกษาอะไรได้หรือ?

โชคดีที่ Pan ไม่ได้เข้ามาปรึกษาเกี่ยวกับผลิตภัณฑ์กับผม แต่มาปรึกษาเกี่ยวกับเรื่องการขาย และการทำ marketing ผ่านทาง internet...โอเค อันนี้ ผมคิดว่าผมพอจะช่วยได้ :)

ที่เขียน blog นี้ขึ้นมา เพราะอยากจะให้กำลังใจลูกศิษย์ของผมคนนี้ แพนเริ่มต้นเอง จากความกล้าหาญและความคิดของตัวเอง ผมก็พอจะรู้ว่าการทำธุรกิจนั้น จะลงมือทำจริงๆหนะ มันยากขนาดไหน มีคนมากมายที่เคยและำำกำลังบอกผมอยู่ตลอดเวลา ว่าอยากจะมีธุรกิจเป็นของตนเอง อยากเริ่มต้นเปิดอย่างนั้น อย่างเริ่มต้นทำอย่างนี้ แต่พอผมคอยสังเกตดีๆ กิจกรรมของคนเหล่านั้นยังคงเหมือนเดิม ไม่แปรเปลี่ยนจากเก่า วันจันทร์ถึงศุกร์ก็ไปเรียนที่มหาวิทยาลัย หรือทำงาน พอตกเย็น ก็กลับบ้าน ดู TV หรือไม่ก็ไปเที่ยวเล่นกับเพื่อน/แฟน เช่นกันกับเสาร์หรืออาทิตย์

"เฮ้ยยย คนเรามันก็ต้องพักกันบ้าง จะให้ทำงานตลอดเวลา มันจะ Burned out เสียก่อน" ผมได้ยินประโยคประเภทนี้บ่อยมากครับ ผมอยากจะเสนอมุมมองอีกมุมหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับการทำงานให้ทุกท่านสำหรับวัน Valentine นี้

ที่ผ่านๆมา คนเข้าใจว่า การทำงาน คือ การตรากตรำ คือการสละเวลาและความสุข ดังนั้น เมื่อหลายๆคนพูดว่าต้องทำงาน เค้าจะคิดว่าการทำงาน คือ การทำในสิ่งที่ไม่ชอบ แต่ต้องทำเพราะเป็นสิ่งที่ก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์แก่ตนเองและครอบครัว (เช่น ได้รับรายได้ หรือ ได้รับชื่อเสียง เป็นต้น) ทำเพราะเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นแต่ไม่ได้ทำเพราะว่าอยากจะทำ

การทำงาน = เสียสละ, เหน็ดเหนื่อย, น่าเบื่อ, ไม่มีความสุข = อยากจะทำให้น้อยที่สุด ไม่อยากจะทำสักวัน
การทำงาน = ทำเพื่อ support ตัวคุณและครอบครัวของคุณ

และที่ผ่านๆมา คนเข้าใจว่า การไม่ต้องทำงาน การพักผ่อน การดูทีวี การไปเที่ยวนั้น ก่อให้เกิดความสุข แต่ไม่สามารถทำตลอดเวลาได้ เนื่องจาก การทำเช่นนั้น ทำให้เราสูญเสียรายได้ หรือ มีค่าใช้จ่ายเกิดขึ้นพูดง่ายๆคือ

การไม่ต้องทำงาน (พักผ่อน,ดู TV, ไปเที่ยว) = สนุก, บันเทิง, มีความสุข = อยากจะทำให้เยอะที่สุด อยากจะทำทุกวัน
การไม่ต้องทำงาน (พักผ่อน,ดู TV, ไปเที่ยว) = NOT การทำงาน = NOT support ตัวคุณและครอบครัวของคุณ (จากสมการด้านบน)

สิ่งที่ผมอยากจะชี้ให้เห็นใน blog นี้ก็คือ สมการที่ท่านได้เห็นอยู่ด้านบนนี้ มันไม่จำเป็นที่จะต้องถูกเสมอไป มันไม่ใช่สมการคณิตศาสตร์ที่ว่า 1+1 = 2 (ซึ่งในบางครั้ง หลายๆคนยังบอกเลยว่า 1+1 ไม่เท่ากับ 2!)
ผมเชื่อว่า การที่เราได้ทำในสิ่งที่เราชอบ ในสิ่งที่เราเชื่อ เราจะไม่เรียกกิจกรรมนั้น ว่าเป็นการทำงานอีก หรือว่า ถ้าจะเรียกกิจกรรมนั้นว่าการทำงาน การทำงานที่ว่า จะไม่ได้มีความหมายเกี่ยวข้อง กับคำว่าเสียสละ เหน็ดเหนื่อย น่าเบื่อ และไม่มีความสุข อีกต่อไป สมการใหม่ที่จะเกิดขึ้น จะกลับกลายเป็น

การทำงาน = สนุก, บันเทิง, มีความสุข = อยากจะทำให้เยอะที่สุด อยากจะทำทุกวัน
การ ทำงาน = ทำเพื่อ support ตัวคุณและครอบครัวของคุณ

การทำงานในแนวคิดใหม่นี้ คือการทำงานเพราะว่าอยากจะทำ ไม่ใช่้เพราะว่า จำเป็นต้องทำ การทำอะไรด้วยใจตัวเองนั้น คงจะต่างกันอย่างมากกับการทำอะไรเพราะว่าถูกใครบังคับหรือทำตามหน้าที่ ผมเชื่อว่า เมื่อสามารถคิดได้อย่างนี้แล้ว การที่จะได้ยินคนใดคนหนึ่งพูดด้วยรอยยิ้มว่า "เขาทำงานทุกวัน โดยไม่มีวันหยุด" ก็ไม่ใช่เรื่องที่น่าแปลกใจอะไรอีกต่อไป

ตอนนี้นิสิตแพนคงจะมีเรืิ่องมากมาย ที่จำเป็นต้องคิด วางแผน การทำงานของเธอจะไม่ได้หยุดแค่เรียน เก้าโมงเลิกเที่ยง พักเที่ยง เรียนบ่ายโมงเลิกสี่โมงเย็น ปัญหาที่เธอจะเจอ จะไม่อยู่แค่ problem sets ที่อาจารย์ให้ หรือ lab report หรือรายงาน ที่จะต้องเขียนอีกต่อไป พูดอย่างนี้แล้วบางคนอาจจะคิดว่าเป็นสิ่งที่น่ากลัว เหนื่อยยาก แต่สำหรับผม การได้เริ่มอะไรที่ตัวเองชอบ ถึงแม้ว่ามีปัญหาเข้ามา ก็ขอให้คิดว่ามันเป็นบททดสอบ บทพิสูจน์ ของความสามารถของเรา เงยหน้าขึ้น เผชิญกับสิ่งที่จะผ่านเข้ามา ด้วยหัวใจที่ร่าเริงและเปิดกว้าง

ขอให้นิสิตแพน ประสบความสำเร็จกับธุรกิจเครื่องสำอางค์จากทะเล Secreta นี้ และมีความสุขกับการทำงานมากๆครับ

วันนี้ผมได้นั่งฟังข่าวตอนทานอาหารเย็น (ดึก) ที่ตลาดสามย่าน ดูแล้ว ก็อดที่จะไม่แสดงความคิดเห็นไว้ไม่ได้ ข่าวช่อง 7 สี เสนอข่าวเกี่ยวกับการทะเลาะวิวาทกันของนักเรียน ที่ผมว่าน่าเศร้าใจไปมากกว่านั้น ก็คือ การทะเลาะวิวาทนั้น เป็นการทะเลาะวิวาทกันของนักเรียนหญิง ซึ่งเกิดเพราะ 1. ชอบคนๆเดียวกัน 2. มองหน้าแล้วไม่ถูกชะตากัน :-(

ในความคิดเห็นของผมต่อข่าวนี้ ผมคิดว่า นักเรียนไม่ว่าทั้งหญิงหรือชาย ทะเลาะกันเป็นเรื่องธรรมดา ส่งที่ต้องทำคือการ ห้ามปราม ตักเตือน และทำโทษ บอกให้รู้ว่าอะไรคือสิ่งที่ถูกต้องและอะไรคือสิ่งที่สังคมไม่ยอมรับ จุดประสงค์หลักที่ผมเขียน post นี้ขึ้นมาก็เพราะ ผมรู้สึกตลก (แต่ขำไม่ออก) ด้วยเหตุที่ว่า ในตอนท้ายของข่าวนี้ ผู้เสนอข่าวพูดว่า "กลัวและไม่อยากให้นักเรียนคนอื่นๆ เอาเป็นตัวอย่าง"

ลองคิดดูให้ดีๆ กับคำพูดของผู้สื่อข่าว...คิด.....

ผมเชื่อว่า ตัวผมและนักเรียนทั้งหญิงและชายเกือบทั้งทั่วประเทศคงจะไม่รู้ว่ามีเหตุการณ์นี้เกิดขึ้น ไม่รู้ว่ามี "ตัวอย่าง" นี้เกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทย แต่เพราะว่า สำนักงานข่าว เลือกที่จะกระจายข่าวนี้ให้คนไทยทั่วประเทศได้เห็นว่าตัวอย่างที่ไม่ดีเป็นอย่างไร (เพื่อไม่ให้คนอื่นเอาเป็นตัวอย่าง........................... หรือ?)

แล้วตัวอย่างที่ดีคืออะไร...................น้อยครั้งที่ผมจะเห็นตัวอย่างที่ดีในข่าวของประเทศไทย..........ทำไม ไม่นำเสนอข่าวถึงตัวอย่างดีๆ ให้คนไทยทั่วประเทศได้เห็น และได้เห็นนานๆ: นักเรียนชนะการประกวดศิลปะ นักเรียนพาณิชย์ชนะการแข่งขันแกะสลักน้ำแข็งโลก คนดีที่ทำงานช่วยเหลือสังคม และอีกมากมายในสังคมไทย ที่ผมคิดว่าเราควรจะเริ่มฉาย spot light สู่คนเหล่านั้น ให้สังคมได้รับรู้และเลียนแบบได้แล้ว

นานๆครั้งที่ผมจะเห็นข่าวดีๆ ข่าวที่สร้างกำลังใจให้แก่คนไทย อยู่ในทีวี และ เมื่อมีข่าวเหล่านั้น เท่าที่ผมจับเวลาดู การพูดถึงของผู้สื่อข่าวเป็นเพียงแค่การพูดผ่านๆ ใช้เวลาโดยเฉลี่ยประมาณ 30 วินาที วันนี้ผมจับเวลาข่าวของนักเรียนที่ทะเลาะกัน เวลาที่ผู้สื่อข่าวพูดเกี่ยวกับเนื้อหานี้อยู่ที่ 6 นาที กับ 18 วินาที!!

การบอกว่า "กลัว ไม่อยากให้เอาเป็นตัวอย่าง" แต่เอาตัวอย่างมาให้คนทั่วประเทศเห็นว่าเค้าทะเลาะกันอย่างไร ขโมยของและคนร้ายยังลอยนวล ข่มขืนแล้วยังตามจับตัวไม่ได้ "กลัว ไม่อย่ากให้เอาเป็นตัวอย่าง" การกระทำกับคำพูดนั้น มันช่างกลับตาลปัตรกันเสียจริงๆ

Merry Christmas to everyone! Wish everyone a healthy and happy time for the rest of the year :). There are so many great (and hilarious) stories I want to share and write about. Particularly, as you might know from my previous post that I have been helping my sister, Minnie, setup and run a new hostel located on Rachathewi (Hua Chang Bridge), called The Old Charm Hostel for a couple of months now. Since then, we have welcomed many guests and some of them just added a lot of color to our lives. I wouldn't write a whole story here but just an Hors-d'oeuvre [ออร์-เดิฟ], we have a nice story of our guests to share: The South African student gang and Mr. Imai (aged 80 and fought in the Vietnam war, World War II) from Japan.

A relaxing grading weekend at Aleenta Resort & Spa, Pranburi

Thanks to my friend and my partner, Dr. Kid, I just had one of the most relaxing days of this year at Aleenta Resort & Spa, Pranburi. The resort is located in Pranburi, which is about 20 kilometers from the famous district of Hua Hin. "Serenity, Sun, Sea, and Jazz Music" are probably the best words that capture the core of this place. There is no television in the room, only books. Pranburi is not crowded as Hua Hin or Cha-am; there are no banana boats, jet skis, or horse ridings here. People who come here typically are looking for a quiet place for reading, clearing their minds, or spending a meaningful time with their love ones (not me in this case ;) ). For me, this was a chance to get away from the city and take the speed of my life down a couple notches. (picture below is me in the morning (7.30AM) figuring out how to play the rope swing in front of our room)

I got to do many things I hadn't had a chance to do since I was a child; things like laying down on the sand and let the wave splashes and takes you around or just stare blankly at the sea. I know it sounds stupid, but I really recommend it. Somehow, it felt great. It felt like.."dang, life doesn't have to be that complicate all the time".

One productive activity that I did while I was at the resort is grading my BSAC students' exams. Frankly, grading is the second on the not-so-fun-activity-in-teaching list of mine (the first is proctoring the exam). But grading next to the sea, it was quite an amazing experience. Not to say that the sea magically makes my grading more fun (because that will be a lie), but the thought that "hey, I am doing my work at the university right now"was just great! (picture below, I was giving a couple perfect scores and a couple zeros to the students ;) ).

By all means, I had a truly great time. At the same moment, I felt lucky and grateful for what I have in my life. I wrote down long list of things I am grateful for while I was at Aleenta. Here are a short version of my list:
-all my basic needs are always met the day I was born. I have been always clothed, sheltered, fed, and taken care of. There wasn't a single day that I worried that I might have nothing to eat today. Not a SINGLE DAY in my life...and there are more than 9500 days passed by in my life...have you ever counted from 1 to 9500? It was such a long counting, wasn't it?
- my father and mother are still alive and strong. They have been with me since the day I was born. I am grateful for their presence.
- I was born normal with a strong motivation to succeed in life. A lot of the time, I was too arrogant to think that my parents contribute little to what I am heading in the future (Our views in the working world are different). But come to think about it, I realized that without their supports in the past, I will not be I am today, regardless how much motivation I have.
- When I was bored, I could run to my siblings and find some interesting topics to chat with them. The worst that they can do to me is kicking me out from their places. But the kicking out process was fun anyway (I am not giving up so easily!)
- I was bless to get a chance to travel and see places in the world. I know that millions of people in the world were born, lived, and died, only seeing their own village for their entire lives.

I am lucky and I know you are lucky too. Happiness in life isn't hard to find; it is all about perspective how you view your own world.

Assignment: write 5 things that you are grateful for your life.

Such a Horrible Day - Cheating on Exam

I have such a horrible day today. Why is it? I caught one of MY students cheating on MY exam. I have to tell you catching a student cheating on the exam isn't fun, and if the student who got caught is someone you already knew in class, the sad and bad feelings were just mutiplied by 100 times :(.

Catching a student cheating on his or her exam is one of the worst experience in teaching. This is a lose-lose situation. Why? On my part, I will have to go through all the 'cheating' protocol set by the university. It wasted both of my time and efforts and those two things are quite scarce in my life right now. Another bad thing is that I will become an unpopular teacher, not just for the student who gets caught, but for the friends and family of the student as well. How bad can it get...teaching in a class full of students that hate you.

For student's part, the consequences are quite detrimental or even change the course of his or her life. The student will definitely receive an 'F' grade, but more damaging than that he or she will be suspended from the university for a year. The fact that he or she received a suspension or there is a one-year skip from his transcript will raise a lot of eyebrows when the student starts applying for jobs, let alone applying for a high-level education. And I am sure, no one wants a cheater in their company or university.

I realized all the bad things that might occur to my student and I am fully awared of the consequences. This action will affect the student's future...and it will affect in a very negative way.

A lot of people might think that I have no choice but to report the cheating action. But I want to disagree with that. Actually, I have many choices in dealing with this situation. The most obvious and easy one is that I can just let it slip by. I can pretend that nothing happen, re-locate the seating positions, and just ask the student to redo his or her exam again. If I were to do that, this lose-lose situation will not occur. So why I am such an idiot NOT to take such actions.

As I already wrote, I am fully awared of my action and its consequences. I know it will affect the student's future in a very negative way. But, for me, I hope this negative affect will not last very long.

There are many reasons I decided to report the cheating action of my student, let call him 'M'. First and foremost, I really hope that M will learn from this experience that bad judgements will have bad consequences. The consequences might not be instant, but I would like M to learn that sooner or later those bad actions will come back and haunt him. It is just a matter of time. Cutting corners and playing outside the rules are UNACCEPTABLE. Those who violate will suffer the consequences, again the catch to this is...no one knows when. But for M, the answer for the 'when question' is today.

The fact that is hurting my heart so much is that I really like M a lot. I know him in person and he is a nice gentleman though dress poorly in class every now and then. He would like to become a drummer and I am sure he will be a great musician one day. To M, if you are reading this, I would like to tell you that I don't like this to happen as much as you do. But what has to be done has to be done. I respect your bravery that you admitted what you have done. I hope you will endure and อดทนต่าสิ่งที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตอันใกล้.
I hope this experience will not let you down in life but rather serve as a bitter-but-good learning lesson to help you grow. I really hope that we can pull out some 'good' thing from this shitty and lose-lose situation even though the 'good' thing will not be seen a decade from now.

Congrats to My Sister Hostel's project - The Old Charm

I have a sister, Minnie (yeah, how's cute, isn't it? my name is Mickey and my sister is Minnie). We started talking about doing a hostel project together in July, 2009. We gave this project a name, The Old Charm. In the beginning, Minnie worked on the project part-time, juggling between her full-time job responsibility at PIA, a leading interior design company located in the Asoke area.

It was just recently (about a month ago) that she made a drastic decision that my parents and I didn't quite agree with. She decided to quit her full-time job after just 4 MONTHS of working there. For me, I believe with her potential, if she can manage her time more effectively, she would be able to take on these two jobs gracefully. But well, she argued that at PIA, the things she was 'busy' doing, were not the things that help her grow up, both personalitywise and businesswise. She just really wanted to take on the hostel project full-time and that how she made up her mind.

A month has passed since Minnie quited her job. Being a distant observer and supporter, I can gradually see how this project has helped her grow. She did a lot of things that she has never done before - negotiating/bargaining/ and purchasing with various kinds of suppliers (beds, closets, insect-nets, curtains, and etc), dealing with different types of people (ranging from business partners to unskilled labors from Burma), and many more. She encountered various things that she never imagine would happen to her life (got bitten by a dog or was called by a traffic police two days in a row)..but it happened.

It seems to be a lot of work, setting up a tourist hostel in Bangkok, well, it really is. We fought with each other, had less time to hang out with friends, and had no weekends since August 2009. But guess what, with all of those things happened to Minnie, I can still clearly see that she is very happy and having a lot of fun doing it. By looking at this equation:
working long hours + no leisure time + having many unpleasant (shitty) things happen to her = happy + having fun, it is funny how can this equation be true, isn't it?

Today, I received an exciting call from Minnie that she just received a cash payment from her first customer, the first customer of The Old Charm. It wasn't that much in term of the money value, but I am sure it means a lot to her.

Congrats to Minnie for her first customer and cheer for the many more to come :)

Teach...even though you don't get paid!

ในช่วงสองสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ผมได้มีโอกาสเป็น speaker ในสัมมนาต่างๆหลายงาน สัมมนาบางสัมมนา speaker ก็ได้รับค่าตอบแทนมากบ้าง น้อยบ้างแล้วแต่กรณี แต่ในหลายๆสัมมนานั้นก็เป็นการพูดแบบไม่มีค่าตอบแทน ในความรู้สึกแรกๆ ที่ได้ถูกเชิญไปพูดในสัมมนาที่ไม่มีค่าตอบแทน ก็แอบรู้สึกเล็กๆได้ว่า เราได้ใช้เวลาและพลังในการเตรียมการสัมมนานี้มิใช่น้อย บางสัมมนาบางครั้งใช้เวลาในการเตรียมหลายวันที่เดียว เวลาที่ใส่ลงไปก็มากกว่า 10 ชั่วโมงก็ว่าได้ เอ้ะทำเยอะขนาดนี้ ทำฟรีแล้วมันจะไหวหรือครับ ความคิดนี้วนเวียนอยู่ในหัวผมอยู่หลายรอบ

แต่วันนี้ผมได้เจอ Article หนึ่งที่เขียนอยู่ใน Trump University ในหัวข้อ Five Things I Do Every Day มีหนึ่ง paragraph ที่เขาได้ให้คำตอบตรงกับความคิดเห็น (แก่ตัว) เล็กๆที่วนเวียนอยู่ในหัวผมมาพอสมควร paragraph นั้นเขียนไว้อย่างนี้ครับ

ได้อ่านบทความนี้ ทำให้ผมระลึกได้ว่า ที่จริงแล้ว ผมต่างหากต้องขอบคุณ บุคคลที่เชิญผมให้ไปร่วมเป็นวิทยากรในการสัมมนาต่างๆ ไม่ใช่ทุกคนจะได้รับโอกาสนี้ โอกาสที่จะได้ฝึกพูดหน้าคนจำนวนมาก หน้าคนที่มีประสบการณ์การทำงาน และมาจากหลายๆ background (มิใช่เป็นเพียงนิสิตมหาวิทยาลัยอย่างเดียวอีกต่อไป) และสุดท้าย ในส่วนของ 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผมคิดว่าผมสูญเสียไปเพื่อเตรียมงาน คนที่มีได้ประโยชน์สูงสุดก็คือตัวของผู้ค้นคว้าเอง...:-)

เริ่มต้นออก Start กับโครงการนวัตกรรมวาณิชย์ (ปีสอง)

วันนี้ผมได้เข้าร่วมฟังการสัมมนาโครงการนวัตกรรมวาณิชย์ (ปีสอง) ที่จัดขึ้นโดยคณะพาณิชยศาสตร์และการบัญชี จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ครั้งนี้ถือว่าเป็นการจัดนวัตกรรมวาณิชย์ในปีที่สอง ซึ่งเริ่มสานต่อจากปีที่แล้ว หัวใจสำคัญของโครงการนี้คือต้องการส่งเสริมให้ประเทศไทย คนไทย มีสินค้าทางปัญญา หรือที่เราเรียกว่าเป็นสินค้าชนิด (Intellectual Property (IP) -based product) เป็นของตนเองเสียที เรามีความรู้มากแล้วกับการปลูกข้าว กับการสร้างร้านอาหาร กับการผลิตเสื้อผ้าตามสั่ง กับการพาทัวร์ท่องเที่ยว เรารู้ว่าต้องทำอย่างไรกับธุรกิจเหล่านี้ ทำอย่างไรถึงจะได้กำไร ทำอย่างไรถึงจะประสบความสำเร็จ แต่ข่าวร้ายก็คือ...ประเทศอื่นนอกเหนือจากประเทศไทย (เวียดนาม, จีน, มาเลย์เซีย) เขาก็รู้วิธีเหล่านี้เหมือนกัน ข่าวที่ยิ่งร้ายไปกว่านั้น ก็คือ ประเทศเหล่านั้นส่วนใหญ่ มีประชากรเยอะกว่าประเทศไทยหลายล้านคนนัก..(จีน = 1600 ล้านคน , เวียดนาม = 83 ล้านคน)...ถ้าเรายังแข่งด้วยธุรกิจรูปแบบเดิมๆ ไอ้หยา พี่ไทยของเราท่าจะเหนื่อยน่าดู

...นี่คือสิ่งที่พวกเรา ผู้ริเริ่มโครงการนวัตกรรมวาณิชย์ตระหนัก และพยายามสร้างสังคมและสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งการเรียนรู้...เรียนรู้ว่าจะแข่งในการทำธุรกิจในโลกใหม่..เราจะต้องทำอย่างไร จะสร้างผลิตภัณฑ์ที่จะไปขายทั่วโลกที่ไม่ใช่เฉพาะเมืองไทย จะต้องมีการวางแผนอย่างไร มีวิธีคิดอย่างไร ที่คือสิ่งที่พวกเราอยากจะเผยแพร่ และแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ซึ่งกันและกัน

สวัสดีค่ะ หนูแค่อยากจะบอกอาจารย์ว่าหนูดีใจมากๆที่ได้มีโอกาสเรียนวิชานี้ ต้องยอมรับว่าตอนแรกไม่ได้รู้ลายละเอียดวิชาเท่าไหร่เลย รู้แค่ว่าเพื่อนๆออกร้านขายของ ย่างเสต็กทำเบอร์เกอร์ ก็แค่คิดว่าวิชานี้ดูน่าสนุกดีจัง และอยากรู้ว่าจะเรียนอะไรบ้าง แต่ทุกคนก็บอกเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่าน่าเรียนมาก

เลยมาขออาจารย์ลงเพิ่ม และอาจารย์ก็ให้เขียน essay สุดท้ายทั้งหนูและเพื่อนก็ได้เรียนทั้งคู่ แต่เพื่อนก็ไปติดอีกวิชาหนึ่งทำให้ไม่ได้เรียน ก็น่าแปลกที่หนูยังยืนยันกับตัวเองว่ายังไงก็จะเรียนให้ได้

พอมาถึงตอนนี้หนูรู้สึกว่ามันคุ้มค่ามากๆ หนูได้เพื่อนใหม่ และสนิทกับเพือนเก่ามากกว่าเดิม มากกกว่านั้นคือหนูได้แรงบันดาลใจในชีวิตค่ะ หนูว่ามันยากมากที่สามารถทำให้คนๆหนึ่งมีแรงบันดาลใจ และแรงกระตุ้นว่า จะต้องทำอะไรได้แล้วนะ ..ถ้าไม่ได้เรียนวิชานี้ ไม่ได้ฟัง guest speaker หนูก็คงจะยังใช้ชีวิตเหมือนเดิมทุกวัน ไม่มีความคิดที่จะทำอะไรใหม่ๆเลย หนูว่าอาจารย์สุดยอดมากที่สามารถหาบุคคลต่างๆมาพูดเล่าประสบการณืได้ตรงกับชีวิตความเป็นจริง และเรียงลำดับ guests อย่างนี้ ไม่รู้ว่าบังเอิญหรือตั้งใจ แต่หนูว่ามันเข้มข้นขึ้นทุกครั้ง และปิดท้ายได้ดีมากๆๆ แม้ตอนนี้หนูจะยังไม่ได้เริ่มคิดทำอะไรเป็นชิ้นเป็นอัน แต่อาจารย์ได้จุดประกายหนูแล้วค่ะ

หนูยังต้องขอบคุณอาจารย์ที่สั่งงาน gap analysis หนูคิดนานมากว่าจะไปสัมภาษณ์ใคร และได้สัมภาษณ์พี่มาแล้วคนหนึ่ง แต่สุดท้ายก็รูสึกว่ามันไม่ใช่ และมาลงเอยที่พ่อตัวเอง ถ้าไม่มีงานนี้หนูคงไม่รูคุณค่าของสิ่งที่พ่อทำ หนูไม่เคยมองเห็นเลยค่ะ ก่อนนี้เวลาไปที่บริษัท ก็คิดเพียงว่าเป็นธุรกิจของที่บ้าน แต่ล่าสุด หนูมองเห็นคุณค่าที่อยู่ข้างใน มันมากกว่านั้น มันเปลี่ยนมุมมองหนูโดยสิ้นเชิงค่ะ

ขอบคุณนะคะอาจารย์ หนูไม่เคยคิดเลยว่าจะมีวิชาในมหาวิทยาลัยที่จุดประกายและสร้างแรงบันดาลใจได้ หนูรู้สึกว่าคุ้มค่าสุดๆเลยค่ะ

ขอให้อาจารย์เจ๋งและเก่งขึ้นเรื่อยๆนะคะ

I hope my student doesn't mind of me posting her email here. So for anyone out there, do you begin to understand how cool is it to work at the university?...

Thus, the right question would be "Why Not" rather than "Why"? :-)

The semester is getting to an end..

Another semester is about to pass by...this semester is quite a fun quarter for me. I got to teach the Entrepreneurship class in my own style. It is interesting to see how students deal with activities and assignments I had given in class. Sure..not all the activities and assignments were great or match the class's objective..but well..a teacher needs to learn along with the students as well..right?

There is another interesting thing that happened to me this semester. It was that I got asked by many students "why" I decided to work here at the university...to be the Arjarn (lecturer). At first, I was perfectly fine to be asked on this question..but as more and more students keep asking me the same question...I start to think..Hm... interesting .."Why NOT"? What is the thing that make having a career as a lecturer different than having a career in business, banking, engineering?

As I ask the "Why NOT" question back to the students who asked me, I found out that most students believe that a teaching (in Thailand) job gets paid very little and most of the cool guys and gals wouldn't want to join the teaching crowd. Some of them think that the teaching crowd consists of bookish and nerdy people who can't deal with real-world industry so they decide to stay in universities. Well..how should I response to these ideas..let me put it this way...They are partially right on the salary aspect. The starting salary is pretty low. However, if you work hard and smartly, I bet you can find many channels of revenue while teaching as well. For the people aspect, I just don't believe that. I think cool people can be part of the country's education system as well.

My Powerpoint slide is getting better!

ผมเริ่มเปลี่ยนวิธีการนำเสนอการเรียนการสอนในวิชาของผมทีละเล็กละน้อยแล้วครับตอนนี้

ผมได้ทำการสอนมารวมๆแล้วก็ปีกว่าๆ เรื่องบางเรื่องได้มีโอกาสสอนแล้วมากถึงสามครั้ง สิ่งหนึ่งที่ผมสังเกตได้คือสำหรับการสอนผ่าน Powerpoint slide ก็คือ เนื้อหาบางเนื้อหา บางทีผมรู้สึกว่าทำไมผมจะต้องพูดให้นิสิตฟัง ทำไมต้องอ่านเนื้อหาใน Powerpoint slide ให้นิสิตได้ยินด้วย โดยเฉพาะเจ้าตัว Bullet Points เนี่ย ตัวดีเลย เขียนขึ้นมา แล้วจากนั้นก็อ่านตามแต่ละ bullet bullet ไป คิดๆดูมันก็เขียนอยู่แล้วใน Powerpoint slide นิสิตก็น่าจะอ่านออก น่าจะอ่านออกตั้งแต่ชั้นประถมแล้ว แล้วผมจะอ่านให้นิสิตฟังทำไม...

ดังเช่น slide นี้ที่ผมเคยใช้ในอดีต

Title ของ slide: แรงจูงใจในเชิงรุกสำหรับการดำเนินธุรกิจระหว่างประเทศ

ความสามารถในการทำกำไร (Profitability)
การมีเอกลักษณ์ของสินค้า (Product Uniqueness)
การมีเทคโนโลยีก้าวหน้า (Advanced Technology)
ความสามารถของการบริหาร (Management Competency)
ความดึงดูดในการจัดเก็บภาษี (Tax Scheme)

พอเวลาผมสอน ผมก็อ่านตาม slide พร้อมกับอธิบายและขยายความต่อละหัวข้อ บางหัวข้อที่ดีหน่อยผมก็จะเสนอตัวอย่างให้นิสิตฟัง....

ลองมาคิดๆดู เอ...มันก็โอเคสำหรับการสอนนะ นิสิตก็คงเข้าใจ...แต่มันไม่มีความสนุกในอารมณ์เสียเลย มีแต่ตัวหนังสือ ตัวหนังสือ และก็ตัวหนังสือ

ดังนั้นผมจึงเปลี่ยนนโยบายของ slide ผมใหม่ โดยนโยบายใหม่จะใช้หลัก 80/20 แล้วครับ นั่นคือ รูปภาพและวิดีโอ 80% ตัวหนังสือ 20% ทำอย่างนี้น่าจะเป็นที่สนใจของนิสิตมากกว่าครับ แต่ที่แน่ๆคนสอนอย่างผมมันกว่าอ่านหนังสือให้นิสิตฟังเป็นไหนๆ

ผมจะเปรียบเทียบกับตัวอย่างที่ผมยกมาในข้างต้น ตัวอย่างข้างต้นมีเพียง 1 slide และ 5 bullet points power point ใหม่ของผมจาก 1 slide จะกลายเป็น 5 slides และไม่มี bullet point แต่จะมีแต่title และ รูปภาพครับ

title: ความสามารถในการทำกำไร

slide 2:

title: ความมีเอกลักษณ์ของสินค้า

slide 3:

title: การมีเทคโนโลยีก้าวหน้า

slide 4:

title: ความสามารถของการบริหาร

slide 5:

title: ความดึงดูดในการจัดเก็บภาษี

แต่ละ slide ผมจะเล่าเรื่องที่เกี่ยวพันกับรูปภาพที่ผมยกมา วิธีผมคิดว่านิสิตน่าจะสนใจมากกว่า เพราะตนเองจะรู้สึกว่า เฮ้ย...มันไม่มีข้อความอะไรเลย สงสัยเราต้องจดหน่อยหว่ะ ...ซึ่งจะต่างจากในตัวอย่างแรกซึ่งมีข้อความอยู่เยอะแล้วใน slide...

นี่แหละครับ technique ใหม่ของผม less text, less reading, more explaining, and MORE PICTURES!

ใครมีไอเดียดีๆอยากจะแชร์ว่าจะมีวิธีสอนนิสิตให้สนุกทำอย่างไรบ้าง ผมยินดีรับฟังครับ ผมเชื่อว่าการศึกษาไม่จำเป็นต้องน่าเบื่อ คนไปดูโน้ตอุดม ได้ตอนหัวค่ำ นั่งได้มากกว่า 3 ชม ไม่มีใครหลับสักคน ผมเชื่อการเรียนในห้องเรียนก็ต้องทำได้อย่างนั้นเหมือนกัน...! :-)

I am on TV (just for a bit)!

Yes, the title is right, I was really on TV last Friday (August, 4th 2009). I was on the show called "Surivipa", the popular talk show in Thailand....for like 30 seconds...hahaha..It wasn't like I did something crazy at the university or became a millionaire in the lightning speed, that all of the sudden, people start interviewing me (though I was working the later one for a while...seem to be at the turtle speed at the moment). In fact, I am part of the Cleo magazine's campaign and the reason I am on TV that day because Cleo wants to promote its campaign to the Thai people..so..nothing about me whatsoever.

It was funny though being part of the show on that day. All we have to do was just walking and smiling. But doing only those two things took us like 4 hours to finish. It was fun though getting to know new people.

วันนี้ผมรู้สึกดีใจมากเมื่อได้รู้ข่าวว่าน้องหม่อง ทองดี จะได้มีโอกาสเป็นตัวแทนประเทศไทย ไปแข่งขันการพับจรวดกระดาษที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ผมรู้สึกเคารพนับถือผู้ใหญ่หลายๆท่าน ที่พยายามดันน้องหม่อง ให้ได้ไปจนได้

เมื่อวานเมื่อได้ยินผู้ใหญ่ในกระทรวงมหาดไทย พูดยืนยันเพียงคำเดียวว่า "กฎหมายก็คือกฎหมาย" ผมรู้สึกแย่กับประเทศและผู้มีอำนาจปกครองประเทศอย่างบอกไม่ถูก กฎก็คือกฎ คนมาก่อนได้รับการรักษาก่อน คนมาหลังต้องต่อคิว ถ้ามีผู้ป่วยหัวใจจะวายต้องให้แพทย์พบเดี๋ยวนี้ พยาบาลจะต้องปฏิบัติตามกฎและให้อีกสิบคนที่มาถึงก่อนได้พบแพทย์ก่อน...จริงหรือ...แต่กฎก็ต้องเป็นกฎนะ??

There is one thing I learned during the time in the US, every rule HAS AN EXCEPTION. When I say every rule, I really mean EVERY.

"แต่ถ้าให้น้องหม่องไป แล้วอีกสามแสน สี่แสนคนที่เค้ามาขอหละ จะทำอย่างไร?" ถ้าผมเป็นผู้ใหญ่และดูแลในเรื่องนี้ ผมจะบอกว่า ถ้าคนอีกสามแสน สี่แสนคน สามารถพับเครื่องบินกระดาษและบินอยู่ในอากาศได้นาน 12 วินาที ผมยินดีและเต็มใจ ให้เป็นคนไทยอย่างเต็มตัวเลย :-).

เขียนหนังสือ...

ตอนนี้ผมกำลังครุ่นคิดเกี่ยวกับการเขียนหนังสือในหัวข้อหนึ่งๆอยู่ครับ ที่จริงแล้วหัวข้อที่ผมสนใจและอยากจะเผยแพร่ให้ลูกศิษย์ผมมีความรู้นั้น มันก็มีค่อนข้างแพร่หลายแล้วในต่างประเทศ แต่ที่หัวข้อ หรือเนื้อความ ยังไม่สามารถไปถึงผู้รับข่าวสารได้มากพอนั้น เห็นจะเป็นเพราะความจำกัดทางด้านภาษาของคนไทยส่วนใหญ่ นั่นเป็นเหตุว่าทำไมผมกำลังจะเริ่มเขียนเกี่ยวกับหัวข้อนี้

หลายๆคนก็คงจะอดพูดกับตัวเองไม่ได้ ว่า โธ่ ก็คงเป็นหนังสือแปลอีกเล่มหนึ่งแน่ๆ แต่ขอบอกตอนนี้เลยนะครับ ว่าไม่ใช่ สิ่งที่ผมจะเขียนไม่ได้ based มาจากหนังสือเล่มใดเล่มหนึ่ง และก็คงจะไม่เป็นหนังสือที่มีตัวอักษรเป็นจำนวนมากด้วย ผมสัญญาว่าจะให้มีรูปภาพมากที่สุด เพราะผมเชื่อว่าคนชอบดูรูป แปลความหมายของรูปให้ตัวเอง มากกว่าการอ่านและฟังความคิดของคนเขียน ที่จริงก็คงจะใช้หลัก A Picture Worth a Million Words (ถ้าเป็นรูปที่ดีนะครับ)

แต่ว่าจะเรื่องอะไร หรือในหัวข้อไหนนั้น ผมขออุบไว้ก่อนนะตอนนี้ครับ แล้ววันหลังจะมาโพสขอความเห็นผู้อ่านอีกทีนะครับ

วันนี้มีนิสิตหนึ่งคนมาปรึกษาผมว่าเค้าจะเลือกเรียนสาขาไหนเป็น Major ของเขาดี การเงินการธนาคาร หรือว่าการจัดการ
นิสิตพงศ์บอกว่า เค้าสามารถมองอนาคตเค้าออกเลยถ้าเค้าเรียนการเงินการธนาคาร ภาพชัดเจนว่าเค้าจะทำอะไรเมื่อจบการศึกษา เป็นการเลือกที่ค่อนข้างจะ Safe... แต่ในใจลึกๆของเขา ชอบการจัดการมาก อยากจะออกมาทำธุรกิจของตนเอง แต่ไม่รู้ว่าจะทำอะไร ตัวเลือกมีเยอะเต็มไปหมด เยอะจนน่ากลัว

หลังจากคุยกับพงศ์สักพัก ผมก็พอจะรู้แล้วแหละว่าพงศ์จะเรียนอะไร แต่อยากให้พงศ์กลับไปคิดดูอีกทีหนึ่งแล้วตัดสินใจเอง ถ้าพงศ์ได้เข้ามาอ่านใน blog นี้ ผมก็อยากจะฝากบทความหนึ่งบทความนี้ให้ หวังว่าจะเป็นความรู้และกำลังใจของพงศ์และทุกๆคนที่กำลังตกอยู่ในสถานะการณ์ที่ต้องตัดสินใจกับสิ่งสำคัญของชีวิตครับ

สิ่งที่หลายๆคนจะทำ ก็คงจะไปสมัคร The Star หรือว่า AF Academy..แต่ด้วยสมมุติฐานว่า อายุของคุณก็คงอยู่ระหว่าง 15 ถึง 30 ปี ลองคิดดูสิว่า ถ้าคุณอายุ 47 ปี ตกงาน และหน้าตาไม่ได้เหมือน บี้ หรือ โฟร์-มด และก็ยังไม่เคยจูจุ๊บใครในชวิตนี้ แล้ว คุณยังจะมีความฝันที่อยากจะนักร้องมืออาชีพอยู่หรือปล่าว

ผมเพิ่งจะอ่านหนังสือชื่อ Rich Dad, Poor Dad โดย Robert Kiyosaki จบครับ หลายๆท่านคงจะเคยอ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้มา(นาน)แล้ว ผมก็เป็นคนหนึ่งที่เคยอ่านแล้วครับ ครั้งที่ผมอ่านตอนนั้นจะเป็นฉบับภาษาไทย รู้สึกว่าจะเป็นประมาณตอนที่ผมเรียนอยู่ ม 3 ฮึ่มมมม ก็นานพอสมควรนะ ตอนนั้นที่อ่านก็ได้ความคิดความอ่านมากมายครับ แต่รู้สึกว่าตนเองเข้าใจแต่เพียงช่วงแรกของหนังสือ พอผู้แต่งพูดถึง ROI หรือ Put Option, Call Option, Sell Short เด็กชายกวิน ตอนนั้นก็รู้สึกว่าจะอึ้งกิมกี่

ครั้งนี้ ได้มีเวลาอ่านจากต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษจริงและมีความรู้พอประมาณต้านinvesting แล้ว ก็เข้าใจหมดทั้งเล่มแล้วครับ :) ที่จะเขียน Post นี้ เพราะผมไปอ่านเจอคำพูดนึงในหนังสือ Rich Dad, Poor Dad ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษที่ผมชอบ และอยากจะแชร์ให้ทุกคนอ่านด้วยครับ ซึ่งก็คือ...

นิสิตจุฬาฯ ชนะรางวัล Global Innovation Tournament จาก Stanford University ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา

Hoooray...I increased my investment by 30% in 20 days!

I made about 80,000 Bahts (2700 USD) in 20 days with the initial investment of 220,000 Bahts. How? In the stock market of Thailand, aka, SET (Stock Exchange of Thailand). Many people had told me not to set my foot close to the Thai stock market. They were saying that, Thailand stock market was so volatile and filled with bad (and rich) people. These people made so much money by doing insider trading while leaving the innocents licking their wounds at home.

But after a few days of scrutinizing the history of Thailand stock index, I came to my own conclusion that this was the time to invest. Early of this year, SET was at 850 points and now it was at 380 points. I convinced myself that it would be hard for the market to tumble any further..(don't you think? 50% should be the maximum, right?). The price of PTT (Thailand Petroleum company) stock used to be around 400 Bahts/stock, right now it was 140 Bahts/stock. Banpu (Coals - Energy company) used to be at 450 bahts, right now it was 160 Bahts/stock. Geeezzz.The opportunity was so enticing.

I also noticed that the political situations in Thailand couldn't get any worse. Come on..the PAD shut down the two main airports of the country, seized the government parliament. There were bombing incidents every day. Definitely, things couldn't get any worse than this. This was my deciding moment. Since, things couldn't get worse than this...it could only get better. And when things got better, stocks surely rose. Man...Was this too simple? I thought to myself. may be..but it made so much sense to me. So I decided for the first time to get into the Thai stock market. I bought PTT for 1100 stocks at around 141 Bahts and Banpu for 500 stocks at around 170 Bahts. I bought these two stocks because the two companies were considered to be the two giant corporations of Thailand. In order to play with the price of these two stocks, you must be either someone really really powerful in the country or someone really really rich. The normal rich guys won't be able to influence the two prices. That's why I chose them.

May I was lucky..or may be my simple logics just did the tricks, the situations in Thailand were getting a bit better. The PAD stopped protesting and gave back both the airports and the parliament. The Democrat party seemed to have an upper hand in forming a new goverment than the Pue Thai (former PPP party). All these good news, make the stocks jump around 20% last week (JUST ONE WEEK!)...may be this was a beginner's luck. But man..it sure did feel great!

As promised from the previous post, I will tell more about how I gave 500 Bahts to one of the students in my entrepreneurship class. So the class was on Wednesday and it was the first lecture of the semester. There is a limit number of seats in the class, namely only 40 students can enroll. It turned out that more than 60 students showed up for the first lecture. I told myself, wow..this class was quite popular.

There are two lecturers for this class, particularly, Aj. Santhaya Kittikowit and I. Aj. Santhaya is quite charming and easy-to-work with faculty at Chula (I heard there was quite hard to find this type of people at Chula..Lucky for me! :) ) The first half of the class began with Aj. Santhaya lectured about the class's logistic and the basic concepts of entrepreneurship. We have a 10 minutes break and then my show was on.

The topic of my presentation is "How to become a millionaire". The term "millionaire" I defined was to earn 30 million Bahts which roughly about 1 million dollars. The main points of the presentation are about creating values to people, being enthusiastic, and being persistent no matter what. I gave many examples, great examples actually like http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ or how to create value from a blank book. Anyways, by the end of the lecture, I asked the students.."So now, do you have some ideas to begin your business? please raise your hand" for a few seconds, no hand is in the air. But when I asked them again..."really? not at all"..there were 3 brave souls who raised their hands in the air. I pointed to one of the hand in the left, picked up my 500 Bahts note in my chest pocket, and walked up and gave it to him". By that time, I could hear the buzz coming from all the students.

Then I made my points. First, "sometimes, you can earn money just by raising your hand...so don't afraid to do it especially in class". Second, "luck always play the part in your life. Even though there are three people who raise their hands, only one gets the 500 Bahts". And my last point is: "but luck can only find you if you are brave enough to do something, something that other people are afraid to do....something that may cause you to lose your face...something like...raising your hand".

That was my first entrepreneurship class :)

This week is a tough week for me.

Now it is 1.11 am and I'm still preparing for my class tomorrow (oh it is today, actually). I think it will take another 2 hours to finish my presentation. Oh dear. This week is a tough week for me. Why? It's because I was bombarded with many classes to teach, Tuesday all the way to Friday, 5 lectures in total. The new semester just started and there were a couple make-up classes from last week (from Piyamaharaj Holiday). I don't know why I am ranting about this rather than finishing up my presentation. I guess it is a way for me to release some pressure in myself?

Anyway, I gave a one-hour lecture on my (first) entrepreneurship class today. It went very well and I have quite many things to talk about..like I gave (bribe?) student for 500 Bahts at the end of the class..I don't know whether doing that is against the university's policy or not. But I was certain the whole class learn something from that 500 Bahts. Anyway, it is always "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" right?

I will write more about this on weekend. Just wish me luck to get through tonight for my presentation. Bye~

It has been a loooong time

since my last post. It was just hard to keep up with this information world, leave alone creating your own information. Anyways, it has been quite some time since my last lecture. I have learned many things along with my lovely and (not so) lovely students. The good thing is I can feel that I am getting better and better at teaching. I have a couple of bad lectures which I feel sorry for my students (sorry guys!).

But you might wonder why I am writing this post again. Two days ago, I wanted to dig down some information that is why I came to my blog, (remember the PlayPump?). I came across my New Year (2008) Resolution, which are the following:
(copy and paste)
1. Learn how to play golf
2. Learn how to play guitar
3. Learn Japanese
4. Exercise 3 times a week (tennis, swimming, weight lifting, soccer)
5. Go to Japan
6. Read one book a month
7. Start one company
8. Change my sleeping habit (go to bed by 11pm and wake up before 8.30 am)
9. Create a homepage
10. Learn web design and Dreamweaver

Today date is Oct 28, 08. It is almost the end of the year and guess how many things I have accomplished out of the ten things above.....TWO
and guess what were they...
Go to Japan & start one company (not quite start but join a just-start company).
Man...2/10..if the students get such a score, I'm sure to fail him or her from the class.
I guess the list is quite or may be too ambitious. Go to Japan requires no effort from my part but the second
thing, joining a startup, was just out of control. It took so much time and efforts and the company still makes
zero revenue. Bottom line is that the company still has a long way to go.

Though I didn't accomplish much from my first intention, I still have something proud that I have done.
1. I spent a lot more time with my little brother, Mack. Putting a lot of efforts in making sure that he will have
the best shot in his educational life. Now Mack, at M.4, knows how to program in Java and about to take a Level-3 Japanese
Proficiency Test in December 3rd.
2. I learned and am still learning about managing people in the real world.
3. My tennis skill is getting better, though I didn't have time to play 3 times a week.

My dad just jumped into the blogging business. I think it is interesting to see the early-adopter of baby boomer generation in the internet era. My dad is definitely an early-adopter in internet..why? I think this one fact says a lot: He has a Facebook account 3 months ago (in March, 2008). Did it say alot? I bet it is ;).

Anyways, I am just very excited to learn that my dad is starting to write a blog. In case you really really want to learn about this stuff, I suggest you post your comment on his blog. I think he is more than happy to translate the part that you are interested to English (his English typing skill is so much better than Thai typing skill) )

The blog will be about what he has been working in the past 30 years....about Gold Business. The topic will vary like when to buy/sell gold, how to invest in gold, the future of gold trading in Thailand, etc.

Meddee.com is now live!

My friend just finished migrating Meddee.com out of Thailand. It wasn't that he did not trust Thai people, but it was the fact that he has less control on the server itself. For instance, he told me that he couldn't just restart the machine when he want to. He needs to call the guy at Internetthai (the company that he hosts the site on) and ask them to restart it for him. Also, there is no way for him to know if the server is currently not functional. He moved meddee.com back to the USA, hosting it on Softlayer.

I guess he makes quite a right choice. The hosting service in Thailand isn't quite reliable and also there are a lot of politics in Thailand. I don't want to blame the system, but you know what..if this site gets so popular and someone with the power wants to shut the site off like YouTube.com, what else can my friend do? The country is supposed to be a free country, but people in power here are not acting like it..so sad :(.

Anyway, I told my friend that there will be some disadvantage of doing this. Namely, the speed will be a bit slower considering the content will be sent from across the globe. But I guess I will have to wait and see if this latency is acceptable.

Japan trip

First of all, I would say something about writing a blog...it is damn hard to keep up with it! In the past couple weeks, I have been to many places like Japan and Vietnam. But guess how many blog posts I did in the past month? Zero! :(.

I will try to keep this blog sync with my life even though I know that there are just a handful of people who are reading it. This post will be about Japan. I went to Japan with the group from Department of Commerce, Chulalongkorn University. There were 15 people in the group. We were in Japan from 15 - 22 May, 2008. Tokyo and Nikko were the two places that we went during this trip.

I've never been to Japan before and this trip would be my first time. I was quite excited since everything I heard from Japan was always cool like automatic toilets, cheap digital camera, on-sen, etc.

I really like Nikko. I felt like there was so natural, waterfall, mountains, and all the trees. It felt very relaxing. And plus, when I was there I did something that was totally scared the sh*t out of me...taking a shower in the public on-sen. Hm..you might ask why was it scared the *hit of out me? Here is the answer: because everyone who used the on-sen has to be nude...wear NOTHING..not even a small piece of white cloth. In Japan, it is the culture. They believe that the on-sen is the place where everyone can be himself or herself, no disguise from their clothings. I have to make up my mind for quite sometime..about 30 minutes. I really want to do this on-sen thingy but the thing that kept bugging me was the embarrassment. I didn't even remember when was the last time that I took a shower with other people. I guess about 8 or 9 years old?..when I played in a shower with my two little sisters. Geeezzz..and now all grown up..and with other people? strangeeeee. I mean it wasn't that embarrassing if the people I met with were the people I didn't know. But the fact that I might run into anyone in the Chula group was just intimidating. I have to see these people when I go back to Thailand and teach at the university. The more I think, the less I want to use this on-sen.

However, I always want to do what I'm scared to do. So I decided that I want to do this on-sen..may be just once in my life...show the THAI PRIDE ! ;). I walked in, took all the clothes off, and then to the on-sen....It felt so gooood. Not the on-sen itself, but the feeling that I can do the on-sen is very aspiring. I met no one from our group while I was in the hot spring bath. I saw about five japanese guys, 2 were young..about my age, 1 old, and 1 was so proud about his private part and kept walking back and forth (I don't know why he was so proud with his thingy that much). The two young guys were quite shy too. I noticed that as they walked, they used their hands to obscure their xxxx (:P, too much observation?)

It was fun and not that embarrassing as I first thought. But here was the good part, as I decided that I was done, I started walking back to the changing room. And as I just about to put on my cloth, another professor walked him..geeezz..that time was such an awkward moment..I swear..should I pretend to not know him? or should I say hi to him? or what should I do? (both the prof and I were naked). I won't tell you what I did..but if you were me, what would you do? haha

Tokyo was a big city. May be a bit too big for me. A lot of shoppings, foods, department stores, and fashion. I bet a lot of girls will love this city.

It is Friday and the rain has been pouring since last night. I decided that I will stay home today and get my pen (just the play of the words, I actually type my article into my laptop) back at my "Web 2.0 and the future of Thai business" article. It has been almost three weeks since I finished the fifth page of the article. Then, there were so many projects happening that it took the time out of me: project with CT Asia.

Anyway, I am writing this post up because I realize how great it is to be a lecturer at Chulalongkorn. We, people in the academia, have so much freedom in term of work life. As long as you are responsible for what you are supposed to do, you can do it wherever you want (at my own house in my case). There is no need to come work at 8am and finish work at 5pm likes many many other jobs. There is neither timesheet to fill in nor a boss to watch you over your shoulder. There are only students and co-workers. In addition, you have to keep learning in order to be able to teach the young minds. You have to buy books (which they give you budget to buy), go to conferences, talk to other smart people. Do all of these so you keep moving with the world. Man..they pay you to learn new things, how great can it get? This is a really cool job indeed.

Thailand is moving forwards in the IP-based business!

I have been involved in a project that tries to promote entrepreneurship in Thailand. The project was started by an incredible man named Mr. Chalermpom, CEO of CT Asia, Co Ltd.. His vision is to revolutionize the way people do business in Thailand. Almost all of the businesses in Thailand, according to Mr. Chalermpon, are still in 'the old world', particularly, food&beverage, retail, energy, and tourism sectors. Very few are from the intellectual property (IP) base.

The project wants to make Thai people aware of the potential business in 'the new world' (whether it is in nanotechnology, biotechnology, or software). We have many great scientists and engineers in Thailand. They created many breakthrough technologies; however, they failed to use such technologies to create a sellable product in the market.

We want to change it now. We want to make scientists, researchers, engineers, marketers all work together. I really believe Thai people are super smart, no less than Indians or Americans. I hope to see many businesses spring from this project. At the very least the business that comes from the rice-genome knowledge should be owned by the Thai company!

I went to Krabi for the department seminar. We stayed at Sheraton Krabi, a wonderful hotel. The seminar is on Friday (the first day) and the rest we just did all the fun stuff like snorkeling, playing tennis, sightseeing, etc. Man..it was fun but I got a bit sick afterward...(too much fun? ;P)

So many things to do!

Despite the fact that it is the summer session here at the university, I start to feel overwhelmed by the work I have to do. Most of the work is about learning new stuff though. In term of actual work work, I only have one article to write and the due date for that is in June. I need to prepare some material for the class but that is quite minimal comparing to the new stuff that I will undergo in the near future.

Here are some of the things I plan to learn when I have time:
1. Adobe Flex (what are this things? It seems to get more and more popular. I want to dig down and find out what I can do with this new technology.
2. CakePHP, a better way to create a website using this PHP framework.
3. OpenSocial -MySpace platform, Hi5 platform. This is where all the social media trend is heading in the future.

My first day of work

My first day of work went pretty smoothly. The day started with many logistics I need to learn about being a lecturer at the university. I have a shared office with, believe it or not, my old friend back in junior-high and high school. My friend graduated from this department, went to work at LEK consulting firm for 2 years, and joined the faculty of Commerce and Accountancy recently.

Dr. Pasu Decharin (http://www.pasuonline.net) is my advisor who will be guiding me through this transition. He is pretty nice and very helpful. The first task that he suggested I should be working at is writing an article for Chula magazine. The topic should be related to entrepreneurial stuff. Hm...any ideas or suggestions?

Dr. Pasu had arranged the 'welcoming lunch' for us, the new lecturers', (so nice of him). We had lunch and talked in many topics, some were gossips, some were serious stuff. I kinna enjoyed it. You know..it wasn't like intimidating or quite welcoming.

At the end of the day, I felt very productive. I had been reading many articles and researching on many topics. There are many topics I want to write about, but somehow I have to link them into the entrepreneurial themes. Anyways, this is pretty amazing...they pay me, allow me to count the time as my scholarship time, and have me learning new things for the sake of getting smarter and be able to teach other people. This is just terrific!

Tomorrow is my first day of work!

Finally, the day has come. I have been living my life randomly for two months. A life without an aim or a focus, a life that I go to bed at 2am and wake up at 11am will end tomorrow. I am very glad about that.

Actually, to say that I have been living without an aim or a focus may be a bit exaggerated. I have been trying hard, thinking hard about what I want to do or what I can do in Thailand. For the past two months, there were many projects came by to my head and kept me busy. None of them seem to be taking off yet, too few clients or the idea was just too outrageous. I am still learning about Thai society and see where I can apply my knowledge. The playing ground here is quite different than the one I had played back in Silicon Valley.

I made one friend today through my girlfriend. He is a doctor at Siriraj hospital. After talking to him, I am quite impressed how much he knows about IT and computer. An incredible guy. He has a lot of entrepreneurial spirits. We discussed many ideas and there is one that he and I are particularly interested in. I will do more research on this new idea and start working. It seems to me that my startup spirit has rekindled again.

I take it as a very good sign for a new beginning. A new friend, a new project, and a new day, they are all waiting for me to get my feet wet again. I can feel it. My dream isn't that far away anymore :)

Thai Iced Tea

Two days ago, I wanted to drink a glass of milk tea. So I asked Mack, my little brother, if we have any tea bags around in our house. It happened that Mack is on the tea-drinking spree right now, which is quite funny for me. He made tea and asked everyone in the house if he or she wanted to drink it or not. Anyways, I drank his tea and wasn't bad at all. But here is the punch line. After I finished up my cup, Mack came and told me that he used sooo much sugar in his tea to make it tasted ok. Dang...how much calories did I consume that day..

Anyways, this post is quite random. I just wanted to learn about how to make Thai Iced Tea. You know the orange creamy drink that is so prevalent in the street of Bangkok. But guess what. For this drink to be in America, it was the favorite of many people who went to the Thai restaurants. I guess that more than 50% of the people at the Thai restaurants ordered this drink. Valentine Day

This year was the first year that I got to celebrate my Valentine day with Fern. I was quite excited and a bit nervous what to do for this special day. Fern told me that I shouldn't buy any roses for me. I was like "Man! are you kidding? Roses and Valentine are supposed to be together. How can you have one without another?" Last year, I sent six roses for her from the US. I knew that she was very happy about it :). So, I came up with an idea to buy her a rose, a non-perishable one! Wow, what a smart dude! This one it can last forever, or at least until she decides to throw it away. hehe.

Anyways, the plan didn't go quite smoothly. It turned out that we had a little fight over places for dinner. It was quite a fight but we managed to get through alright. Anyways, just want to say Happy Valentine to everyone who might stumble upon this blog :)
